Board of Governors

Five members of the Board of Governors hold seats by virtue of their positions: the presidents of The University of North Carolina, Duke University, and Research Triangle Institute and the chancellors of North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; three are specified in the bylaws: William C. Friday, Marcus E. Hobbs, and William F. Little; nine are appointed annually to represent Duke University, The University of North Carolina general administration, North Carolina State University, and UNC-Chapel Hill; and up to fifteen are selected from the business and scientific communities.
